Altamura, Itally

We had heard and read about this little bread bakery in Altamura that has been baking bread since 1391. We set off to find it and taste some of their bread.  It was two hours from Monopoli, our base. Altamura is in a valley where grains are grown.  The valley is full of acres and acres of cultivated land.

We wandered through the tiny streets (that look more like alleys) to find this bakery.  It is in a cellar hidden in a back street. There was a line of people buying bread products when we arrived at noon.

There is a massive oven full of bread good . The bakers are constantly putting things in and taking things out using paddles that are 6 feet long.

This is the street where the bakery is located.  As it turns out, the town is full of bakeries and is known for its bread products. Just outside the bakery, two women were making pasta on the street.

Rick promised  lunch at a castle.  When we arrived it was a ruin in the middle of farm country.  So we tailgated lunch with our focaccia from Antico Forno Santa Caterina, wine we got at our wine tasting, and fruit that we bought at the farmers market in Altamura. Best lunch ever!

  1. That is quite the bread selection! Made me drool. Your tailgate lunch looked amazing. Those dry stone buildings were really something. Where else would I learn about this stuff? Love it!
